Between the rebuttal report I’m working on (I was at the office past midnight on Monday) and my back acting up Ive not made much progress on the bench this weekend. However, I did pick up a “new” vise off of Craig’s list.
I think it’s a craftsman Columbian vise and its a beast. I had been planning on picking up a small quick release vise to use as and end vise (my bench is going to have a leg vise) but this thing is massive.
Some minor rust removal, oil, and maybe some new paint and this thing will be good to go.

I’m not generally fond of metal vices, but that one looks fun. Looking forward to reading (and seeing) how the restoration goes. I have only successfully restored old iron by first stripping and grinding it bare. Would love to learn other approaches

Yeah this is going to be the tail vise on the bench, it was a pretty good price and in my neighbor hood to it was hard to pass up.
I think the paint is in okay shape, most of the work will be stripping rust off the threads and rods.

I passed up one of those exact vise before but the price was way steep for my liking $300 cdn

Exactly my thoughts. It was a quick release and in very fine shape. I kinda do regret letting that one go as it probably would have served me fine for a lifetime.

True but electrolysis and an abrasive wheel can work wonders.
